Required Knowledge:
The Supplier Engineer must have the technical background to effectively assess the
adequacy of supplier design, production, quality systems and test/verification methods as applied to server, PCBA’s and associated critical components/assemblies and a demonstrated ability to drive corrective and preventive action, with suppliers to address identified weaknesses. A working knowledge of Quality assurance methods, tools, and standards is required including, but not limited to, Quality Auditing statistical analysis and process control methods, ISO 9000, closed loop corrective action principles, and supplier qualification methods/strategies. This position requires excellent verbal and written communications skills and the ability to interface effectively with diverse functions across multiple geographic operations at all levels of Sun and Supplier organizations, to drive improvement in product and process quality and efficiency.”

Preferred Knowledge:
Knowledge of Design for Manufacturability principles and ability to identify improvement opportunities or risks and drive actions cross-functionally, within Sun and with Suppliers to implement solutions. ASQ, CQE or CQAS certifications. Experience in dealing with suppliers in diverse geographic locations is preferred. New Product Introduction experience - from conception to Product End of life. (Workstation, desktop or server experience). Thorough understanding of computer hardware/architecture. In depth knowledge of server and PCBA manufacturing process and experience in dealing with manufacturers, in low cost geographies, is preferred as is direct experience in a supplier engineering or technical management role, related to manufacture of high end, mission critical computing equipment. Experience in value engineering and regulatory/safety compliance requirements is a plus.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Essential Functions:
The Supplier Engineer is responsible for the technical aspects of supply base performance, supporting continuous improvement relative to Sun’s requirements for quality, cost, lead time, and time to volume.
Key responsibilities include: Tracking and reporting of supply base quality performance, for server products used in high end, mission critical applications. Analysis, resolution, or escalation of supplier quality issues and continuous improvement of supplier product, process quality and efficiency. Technical qualification of supplier processes and purchased sub tier components for High Volume Operations. The Supplier Engineer will support Sun’s business continuity and sourcing strategies by participating in evaluation, selection and
qualification of contract manufacturer, for X-64 and SPARC server products. The Supplier Engineer acts as a primary technical and quality interface between Operations and the supply base. Excellent communications skills and the ability to interface effectively at all levels of Sun and Supplier organizations, to drive continuous
improvement in CQLT is required. Leadership or facilitation of project teams may be assigned as a part of the position responsibilities. This position may entail leading teams and driving implementation of supplier technical capability improvement initiatives and improvement of Sun’s processes for technical management of Sun Worldwide Operations suppliers.
