The DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA has an exciting opportunity available for an experienced Web Developer. Will work as part of the Scientific and Institutional Applications Team to design, develop and implement external / internal web sites and web pages. Requires a creative development background to produce custom web designs and participate in transforming current systems to modern web applications. Will work on projects of moderate scope and interact with other informatics, scientific and administrative personnel to organize and structure information, data and web pages and assist with trouble-shooting, maintaining and enhancing existing web pages (see https://www.jgi.doe.gov).

The selected candidate will be hired at the Web Developer 2 or 3 classification depending upon the candidate’s level of experience and qualifications. Positon reports to the Scientific and Institutional.Applications Group Lead.

Job Duties

Essential -
- Work as part of the Scientific and Institutional Applications team to design, develop, implement and maintain web pages and UI designs for web applications.
- Determine overall web design and organize information and data to be displayed.
- Provide technical writing, web design, and image manipulation using graphics design tools like Photoshop.
- Develop internal and external documentation of web structure.
- Work with internal and external customers to troubleshoot, maintain and enhance web pages and web-based applications.
- Run applications on Unix to test web pages.
- Work closely with the team leader and other informatics, administrative individuals and biologists as required.
- May occasionally be called upon to assist in other high-priority projects on an as-needed basis.

Essential duties for the Web Developer 3
In addition to the job duties described above, the Web Developer 3 will:
- Operate at a higher level of independence and responsibility when carrying out assignments.
- Will troubleshoot and solve diverse and challenging problems, exercise independent judgment and select appropriate solutions.
- Mentor and train other team members in areas of expertise.

Key Success Factors

Essential -
-Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Web Design or related field (or equivalent experience) and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing web pages with an existing portfolio of created designs using contemporary web standards.
- Experience running PC and Mac applications.
- Demonstrated experience with the use of image manipulation tools and knowledge of HTML, CSS, Javascript.
- Understanding of cross-browser capability issues.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in an environment with short deadlines, and ambiguous or evolving requirements and live data.
- Ability to interact effectively with users with minimal computer expertise, and to work effectively with biologists, production staff, and other team members.

Marginal -
- Familiar with Photoshop, Dreamweaver and other web designing programs.
- Some familiarity with DNA sequencing processes and technology preferred.
- Demonstrated proficiency with writing and editing technical work

Essential Qualifications for the Web Developer 3 -
In addition to the qualifications listed above, the Web Developer 3 requires:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Web Design or related field (or equivalent experience) and a minimum of 5 years relevant experience.
- More in-depth technical and analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot and solve diverse and challenging problems.

Notes

This is a full-time two-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance, continued work, and funding availability. Classification will be at the 2 or 3 level depending upon the applicant’s level of skills, knowledge, and relevant experience. The work schedule may include off-hours and/or weekends. Work will be performed at the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI), Production Genomics Facility (PGF) located in Walnut Creek, CA.
